IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Howard
Reaves
January 5, 1940 – September 2, 2024
For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
William Howard Reaves Jr. passed away peacefully at home on September 2, 2024, a day that also marked his father's birthday. Born on January 5, 1940, in Greensboro, North Carolina, William was the cherished son of William Reaves Sr. and Rev. Mrs. Atlanta McBride Reaves of Pittsboro, NC.
Raised in a deeply Christian home, William grew up attending Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church. He completed his education at James B. Dudley High School, where he also met the love of his life and future wife, Willie Mae Reaves. After many dedicated years of service, William retired from Guilford County Schools in the late 1980s.
A man of many interests, William was especially passionate about music in his younger years. He played bass guitar with a local band in the Greensboro area, relishing every moment of the experience. Known for his love of working with his hands, he had a special talent for refurbishing electrical equipment—a hobby he pursued until his health began to decline. Always self-motivated and quiet by nature, William could often be found in his backyard, meticulously repairing and transforming items back into working order.
William was preceded in death by his parents, William and Atlanta Reaves; three sisters, Elizabeth Bass, Edith Hunter, and Helen Mills; and two brothers, Earl Spruill and John Spruill.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Willie Mae Reaves; his son, Wynton Reaves (Gail); two daughters, Gail Donaldson (Anthony) and Shelia Willett (Douglas); six grandchildren, Nathan, Morgan, Jordan, Jacob, Joseph, and June; one great-grandson, Carter; two nieces, Monica Gilbert and Roxie Wilkins; and one nephew, Claude Reaves.
William's quiet strength, deep faith, and love for his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A public viewing will be held Monday, September 9, 2024 in the Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel, 905 E. Market Street, Greensboro from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
A homegoing celebration will be held on Tuesday, September 10 in the Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel; visitation with the family begins at 2:00 pm followed by the service at 2:30 pm. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park.
