Obituary

It is with great sadness the family of William Walton "Bill" Ray announces his passing on Saturday, June 24, 2017. Bill was a friend to a great many people and will be sorely missed by so many who were blessed to cross his path in life.

Bill's passing comes a day and two months after having lost Helen, his bride of more than 66 years. He is survived by his sons, David, Tony, and Rick who knew his love and generous provision throughout their lives. Bill will also be fondly remembered by multiple generations, including his grandchildren, Shaina, Caleb, Nowell, Isaac, Justin, and Melissa, and not to exclude others who were a cherished part of his family including Chris, Michelle, and Miko.

Bill was born at home in Hillsborough, North Carolina to Mamie Brown and James Clyde Ray, and was predeceased by his sister, Kathryn Ray.
Born in that small North Carolina town, Bill passed up an opportunity to go to medical school and graduated from Wake Forest University. He married Helen and they left central North Carolina for Northern Virginia where they raised their family, and became active members of the Wesley UMC, and Centreville UMC. Bill was active for many years in The Optimist Club in Vienna, Virginia, and worked his entire career with one company, New York Life, in insurance sales. They eventually retired to Greensboro, joining the West Market Street UMC. A (Wake Forest) Deacon to the end, it was rare to see him in public without an article of clothing from his alma mater.

A Memorial Service will be held in Leak Chapel, West Market Street UMC in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday, July 1st, 2017 at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held in the Gathering Space of the church following the service.

Memorials may be made to Compassion International at Compassion.com, https://www.compassion.com/ways-to-donate.htm.
