IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Grant
Hill, Sr.
November 24, 1930 – August 30, 2023
William Grant Hill, Sr., was born November 25, 1930 to the late Ulysses Grant (1936) and Agnes Franks Hill (1987) in the Smith Farm, White Oak Community, Maysville, NC. He departed this life on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at his home in Greensboro, NC.
William was predeceased by his parents and siblings: Annabelle White Crawley, Estella Dudley, and Leslie Godley (sisters); Clarence Hill, Roosevelt Hill, and Robert Lee Hill, also known as RL (brothers).
Around the age of 14, William Sr. accepted Christ into his life, was baptized, and began teaching Sunday school at White Oak Baptist Church.
William attended Jones High School Consolidated and graduated in 1952. He began attending North Carolina A&T College (former name), majoring in Electrical Engineering. His college education was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 where he served 2 years and was honorably discharged in 1955.
One of William Sr.'s most memorable events was when he had the honor of shaking hands with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the campus of Bennett College.
Praying to God for a wife, William went on a blind date with Barbara Jean Brothers in Jamestown, NC, arranged by a mutual friend, Patsy Holt. William Sr. and Barbara dated for 3 years while William was then employed at North Carolina A&T as a Lab Instructor. William Sr. proposed to Barbara and presented her with a ring by placing it, unknowingly to Barbara, in a bag of items. They married on December 27, 1969 at Mt Vernon Baptist Church, High Point, NC. To this union, four children were born: daughters, Debra Anita McMillian (Tony Lashawn), and Jennifer Michelle Hill; sons, Richard Ulysses Hill (deceased on day of birth) and William Grant Hill, Jr. (Tiara R Monroe).
After re-enrolling as a student at North Carolina A&T State University, William Sr. graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
This educational endeavor led to employment at his alma mater that ended in retirement from the Department of Engineering, September 1995. In 1977, William answered the call into the ministry on the same day his elder son, Richard, was born and deceased. This same year, he enrolled in Shaw University (Raleigh, NC) from which he earned the Master's degree in Divinity in 1980. He later received an Honorary Doctorate from Bethlehem Bible College.
William Sr. was called to pastor First Baptist Church in Trinity, NC in 1979 and, during this leadership, the new building of the church was completed in 1992. Locust Grove Baptist Church, Brown Summit, NC received him as pastor in 1996 where the new fellowship hall was erected under his pastorship.
In 2004, William Sr. was named Man of the Year by the High Point Association. Whenever he was not attending to pastoral duties, he enjoyed spending time in his hometown of Maysville, NC with his family - where he is affectionately called "Uncle Grant."
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Of William Sr.'s many achievements, he would most love to be remembered as a man who honored the Word of God as the "final" authority. Any time a perplexing or controversial question was asked to him, he would respond in the gifted and robust voice miraculously given to him by God: "What does the Bible Say?"
Dr. William G. Hill, Sr., leaves to carry on his precious memory and his phenomenal legacy: His loving wife, Barbara Jean Brothers Hill; his children (named above); his sisters, Christine Dudley and Evelyn Scott; his granddaughters, Bria Lashawn McMillian, Ava Lindsay and Autumn Harper Hill; his grandson, Asa Hill McMillian and a host relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held on Thursday, September 7 in United Institutional Baptist Church, 802 E. Market Street, Greensboro 12:00 pm. Interment will follow in Carolina Biblical Gardens.
