GREENSBORO - Mr. Thomas J. Pace, 91, entered into eternal rest on May 13, 2011. A funeral service will be Friday, May 20, 2011 at 12 p.m. at St. James Presbyterian Church, 920 Ross Avenue, Greensboro. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family visitation is from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m.
Thomas was born March 19, 1920 in Franklin County, VA, to the late Tom and Rosa Pace of Henry County, VA. He worked various odd jobs while growing up there. In 1941 he enlisted in the Army and joined the action of World War II. He was discharged in 1945 to a military hospital where he spent a few years after the war.
He moved to Greensboro to work in the textile factory and attend NC A&T College. He earned an Associate's Degree in Carpentry. He met his future wife, Lelola Martin, and they were married in October, 1951. He found work in the automotive industry and moved to Flint, MI working for Buick. The industry was not always employee friendly with lay-offs coming at any time. He decided to stay in Greensboro with steadier work available. Thomas worked for Bates Nitewear during the 50's and early 60's. He began working for the US Postal Service in 1962 and retired on his birthday in 1985.
Thomas was a very calm and collective person who always looked for the good in people. He believed in having a good time and laughing or making others laugh when he could. He was an avid golfer until his late 70's and enjoyed driving to visit big cities. He had a great love for his military experience, his local American Legion Post, and was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Thomas also loved to engage in political debate.
Thomas was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lelola L. Pace. He is survived by: sons, Anthony L. Pace (Denise), Suitland, MD, Andre P. Pace (Sharon), Greensboro and Thomas Owens (Ethel Belle); nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; his caring sister, Helen Gilbert, Bassett, VA; sisters-in-law, Catherine Pace and Alzina Gilbert; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
