Thomas Roger Fox was born February 8, 1939, in Greensboro, North Carolina (Guilford County) to the late William Roger Stanback and Julia Caldwell Fox. On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, he transitioned peacefully from this life after recently celebrating his 83rd birthday.
Thomas "Tommy" spent his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama, and graduated from Samuel Ullman High School in 1959. Tommy excelled in many sports and was a star athlete in track, swimming, baseball, and football; however, he was most passionate about basketball and golf. Upon graduation from high school, he went on the road playing professional basketball for the Harlem Hobos for two years.
Thomas served honorably in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne Division, also known as the Screaming Eagles, from 1963 to 1965. He was stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and served as a paratrooper. While in the Army, Tommy also played on the United States Army Basketball Team.
Thomas returned to Greensboro and began working at Lorillard Tobacco Company in 1967, where he worked for 34 years. Thomas was an avid golfer, playing since the age of 13. He was well known throughout the Triad region and North Carolina, playing in many golf tournaments.
In addition to his parents, Thomas is preceded in death by two brothers and sisters: William Fox, Anthony Stanback, Ann Stanback, and Patricia Martin.
He leaves to cherish his memory: four children, Rodney Howard, Daryl Fox (Debbie), Marvin McManus, and Fenecia Fox; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayman Bernard Johnson "Slack" (Sharon) and James C. Stanback; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
A public viewing will be held at Hargett Funeral Service, Inc., 905 E. Market Street, Greensboro from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday, March 7, 2022.
A homegoing celebration will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 in Fellowship of His Glory, 7010 Spencer-Dixon Road, Greensboro. Visitation with the family begins at 11:00 am followed by the service at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.
