Avery, Jr.
August 28, 1931 – November 15, 2019
Thomas Hill Avery Jr., born on August 28 th , 1931 to Thomas Avery Sr. (Augusta, Ga), and Mason Dunston Avery (Raleigh, NC) journeyed peacefully home to God and his beloved wife Margaret on November 15, 2019.
Thomas lived a life of service and honor to God, his country, his family and his community. He walked everyday with gratitude and faith. Thomas was a Mason and a devout Christian. For over 57 years, he was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greensboro, NC. Thomas was a United States Army Veteran (1953), who served in South Korea during the Korean War as a Radio Engineer in the Army's Signal Corp. After the war, Thomas received his Bachelor's degree in Electronics from Hampton University, a Master's in Industrial Education & Technology from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and a Manufacturing Engineer Certification in the field of Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
Education was Thomas' passion and he spent 60-years teaching at Historically Black Universities and Colleges; Bluefield State College, Hampton University, and North Carolina A&T State University. Prior to retirement Thomas Avery, fondly known as Professor Avery or just Mr. Avery, spent 57-years of his teaching career as an Assistant Professor in the School of Technology at North Carolina A&T. During his University tenure, Professor Avery served under seven Chancellors and two interim Chancellors. Professor taught over 4,000 students at Price Hall. Professor Avery developed the Electronics program for the University and played a major role in bringing to life the NCAT Radio Station WNAA 90.1 FM. He positively touched the lives of countless faculty, staff and students across the campus of North Carolina A&T State University. Professor Avery retired at the age of 85.
Regardless of Thomas Hill Avery's many accomplishments, he was a strong, humble and compassionate man with a big voice and a jovial laugh. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and teacher! He was a phenomenal Man of God!
Thomas joins his beloved wife Margaret Lois Simpson Avery, mother Mason Dunston Avery and Thomas Avery Sr. and Sister Ruth B. Smith. Thomas watches over his daughter, Dr. Regina Avery Epps of Greensboro, NC, grandson Avery Epps of San Diego, CA, granddaughter, Remy Epps of Greensboro, NC, one sister-n-law Thelma Hatchet of Greensboro, NC; a host of nephews, nieces, friends including his faithful friends Tyrone Evans and Glenda Davis.
A homegoing celebration will be Friday, November 22, 2019 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1414 Gorrell Street, Greensboro, NC. Visitation with the family will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by the service at 1:00 p.m.
