IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sheldia Hedrick
Wallington
May 5, 1939 – November 21, 2021
Sheldia Loretta Wallington (Aunt She) was born on April 5, 1939, in Guilford County to the late Jarious F. Hedrick and Bishop Pearline E. Hedrick. She attended Florence Elementary School and graduated from James B. Dudley Senior High School in 1957. Since graduating, Sheldia remained an active alumni member of DHS consolidated reunion activities.
Sheldia started singing at an early age under the leadership of her mother, Bishop Pearline Hedrick. "The Hedrick Four" consisted of Sheldia, her siblings Skeekie, Douglas and Everett. They later sang with their uncle, Joseph W. Hedrick, as the Guilford Gospel Singers. Bishop Pearline Hedrick and her children then formed The Southern Stars, which was renamed The Rising Gospel Singers. In 1967, The Rising Gospel Singers became active members of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (North Carolina Chapter), where she served for 17 years. While Sheldia loved singing, it was her love for the Lord and the Word of God that she loved the most. Sheldia accepted Christ at an early age and placed Him at the center of her life, until she was called home.
Sheldia joined New Cedar Grove Baptist Church where she played the piano.; however, the Lord called her to move her membership to Cedar Grove Baptist Church (CGTOP). Under her leadership as Minister of Music, Sheldia formed the Gospel Choir, later renamed J. W. Hedrick Gospel Choir, the Male Chorus, the award-winning Johnnie Settle Ensemble and The Buds of Promise. As a Sunday School and BTU teacher, the spiritual growth of many was cultivated. She was also affiliated with the Guilford Educational and Missionary Baptist Association serving as the musician in the Sunday School Department and Vice President of the Missionary Department. She worked diligently in the Culinary Ministry as well as The Academy for Learning Summer Enrichment Program.
Sheldia encouraged so many to pursue their dreams and life's purpose. It was her love for the Lord, family, church, friends, and her community that made her a jewel to all who had the pleasure to meet her spirit.
She worked briefly in the College Dairy Bar, neighborhood soda shop and in Dr. Kidd's Optometry Office. Later, she received her beautician's license from MACO Beauty College and was the hairdresser for many relatives and friends until she retired. Sheldia worked for AT&T (formerly known as Western Electric) for over 25 years until her retirement in 1998.
In addition to her parents, Sheldia is preceded in death by two children, Cynthia and Frankie Wallington; six siblings, Peggy Russell; Oscar Hedrick (Laverne); Ronnie Hedrick; Everett Hedrick (Verona), Rev. Douglas Hedrick (Phyllis); and Algie Z. Howard; and two adopted sisters, Thomascene Carpenter and Frances Hodges.
Sheldia married her first love Frank Thompson, Jr. and to this union was blessed with three children, Cynthia, Frankie & Eric.
Sheldia leaves to cherish her husband, Odell of 48 years of marriage, son, Eric (Gloria); 4 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren; siblings, Elder Gloria Pettiford; Elder Romell Greenlee (Bishop Edward); Minister John Hedrick (Linda); Hilda Jones (Minister Harvey); Howard Hedrick (Faye); Frances Witcher (Minister Russell); honorary sister Helen Caldwell (Rev.
