Obituary

Raymond "Doc" Smith was born to the late Jack and Carrie Smith on March 6, 1930. He departed his earthly life on Tuesday, December, 29, 2015.

"Doc" served in the United States Army from 1951 til 1953. After leaving the military he became employed with the U.S. Postal Service. He then was employed with the City of Greensboro as Manager of the Gillespie Golf Course where he worked for sixteen years. Raymond had a passion for golf and was among the first black men to play golf in Greensboro. He was also a great carpenter and brick mason. As a testament to his skills he built the home where he lived on Webster Road in Greensboro, NC. After the passing of his wife, Hannah Smith, he took over her job for a few years as Crossing Guard.

He leaves to mourn a son, Chris Smith of Greensboro; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Pastor Fannie Simms and Terry Gary both of Greensboro; 3 brothers, David Smith, Thomas Smith, and Wayne Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A homegoing celebration will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 3:30 pm.
