Oquilla L. Backstitch, born December 17, 1923 in Reading, PA to Anna Jane Staples Johnson and Charlie Johnson departed this life October 23, 2010. She was preceded in death by a sister Darlene Johnson of Reading, PA.
As a faithful member of Persimmon Grove AME Church, she was active in the Missionary Society, Sunflower Club and especially enjoyed going to Sunday School.
Early in her life she left Reading and traveled until she met and married Eugene Backstitch and settled in Savannah, GA. Several years after the death of her husband she moved to Greensboro to be closer to her family.
Survivors include her daughter Diane Johnson Buchanon of Greensboro; grandsons Dale Allen Johnson of Greensboro and Gardner Lee Johnson of Bennettsville, SC; great-grandsons Bradley Dearmon of Greensboro and Declan Johnson of North Dakota; great-great-grandsons Jaycin, Tayshaun and Micah Dearmon, all of Greensboro; nephew, Darryl Goldstein of San Francisco, CA; great-nephew, Darnell Johnson of Johnstown, PA; Great-Aunt, Mary Alice Sapp of Greensboro; and a host of cousins, family members and friends.
Two individuals of special acknowledgement who were always there when needed are Claralean Burrows and Ervin A. Donnell, Jr., both of Greensboro.
