Nettie ("Nett") Foxx Martin, daughter of the late Georgianna Foxx and Roscoe Foxx, was born in Mt. Holly, N.C. on August 9, 1929. She moved to Greensboro, N.C. at the age of 3 with her family, including her older siblings: Arthur, Roscoe, Mary, and Johnny. All of her family members predeceased her, including Roberta Martin, a niece raised as a daughter. Nett departed this life at home on Sunday April 2, 2017.
Nett attended the Greensboro public schools, graduating from Dudley Senior High in 1947. In 1949 she married Waldo E. Martin, Sr. They shared forty-five years together as wife and husband and parents, until his death in 1994. Together they raised Waldo Jr., Stephen, and Shelia, who deeply mourn their mother's loss and continue to honor their parents' memory.
Nett was a one-woman fashion show whose colorful and original hats, handbags, and outfits reflected her elegant style, charm, and magnetism.
Nett worked for almost forty years as a domestic, cook, and caterer extraordinaire. A legendary cook, particularly celebrated for her lip-smacking pound cakes, she delighted in sharing her culinary creations with family and friends.
That wide and loving circle of family and friends always began with the Shelton-Miller Clan. Lately, Melvin was "the President." That circle also included her church family at United Institutional Baptist Church, which she attended for 84 years. Particularly important for Nett were the "Sisters of United": Mattie Jo Williamson, Odessa Patrick, and Juanita Baxter Giles.
Friends indeed loomed large in Nett's life. Gloria LeGrand, Nett's "adopted" daughter (and caregiver), almost immediately became one of Nett's "besties." Key lifelong "besties" who've all gone on to glory include Mildred Shelton, Virginia Roper, Helen Dean Johnson, Tempie Currie, Myrtle Lowry, and Marie Lowry.
In addition to her children and a host of friends, Nett leaves to cherish her memory a host of relatives, including four granddaughters — April, Crystal, Jetta, and Coral Martin; two great granddaughters — Kayla White and Josephine Wade; and, two daughters-in-law — Avis L. Martin and Catherine L. Macklin.
Nett was a true original — a larger than life personality: brilliant, wise, witty, beautiful, driven, feisty, frank, a marvelous storyteller, and utterly charming. Her loving and powerful presence will always live in our memories and in our hearts.
A homegoing celebration will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at United Institutional Baptist Church, 802 E. Market Street, Greensboro. Visitation with the family begins at 12:30 pm followed by the service at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park.
