Obituary

Mary Louise Westbrook Shoffner, daughter of the late Lewis and Mattie Hood Westbrook, departed this life on Thursday, January 7, 2016 in her home. Mother Mary was born June 7, 1914. She was 101.5 years of age.

Mother Mary joined Skenes Chapel Holiness Church in 1930, when services were held in a house on E. Market St. (the Jonesboro community). As a young woman she worked at Lane's laundry with the late Sister Irene McMurray. After her mother's death she became an adopted daughter of Paul and Mary Jane White and a lifelong friend of Elder B W Shoffner. Mother Mary and Elder Shoffner married brothers: Raymond and Robert Shoffner of Liberty, NC.

Mother Mary is the Mother of our church. She was Sunday School secretary and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was head of the program committee, which oversaw all the Christmas, Easter and other special programs for the youth of the church. She also wrote most of the plays and skits performed. Mother Mary played the piano for the church and senior choir until her hearing diminished. She was an active member of the Pastor's aide Club under the leadership of Bishop A J Lewis Richmond.

Mother Mary has touched many lives, as her and Elder Shoffner visited the sick and shut in. They traveled together most of their adult lives doing the missionary work that God anointed them to do. Elder Shoffner would pray and heal their souls, and Mother Mary would cook soul food for the nourishment of their bodies. She is the oldest member in the United Sons and Daughters of True Holiness and Skenes Chapel Church. Mother Mary has been faithful and never wavered in her belief that someday she will hear the Lord say: "Well done, thy good and faithful servant.

Mother Mary is survived by her niece, June McMurray (George); grandniece, Jacquetta McMurray; great grandniece, Sara Taylor; great grand nephews, Tr? McMurray (Denise) and Zackery Hamilton; very special friends: Vilma Pass, Barbara Wiley, Sharon Colbert (Fred), Shannon Prewitt, and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ.

A homegoing celebration will be held on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Skenes Chapel Holiness Church, 350 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Greensboro, NC. Visitation with the family begins at 1:00 pm followed by the service at 1:30 pm. Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.
