Obituary

Mrs. Martha Louise Tatum Flowers, daughter of the late Rachel Tatum Jefferies and Harry Tatum, Sr., was born August 8, 1941 in Brown Summit, NC. She entered into eternal rest on February 23, 2019.

Martha graduated from Brown Summit High School in 1959 and married her husband of 58 years, Mr. Ray K. Flowers in 1960. To this union one daughter, Saundra Flowers DeLauder, and one son, Hugh Da Vinci Flowers, were born.

Martha was hired at Sears Mail Order in the early 1960s and was instrumental in integrating the Audit Department. She also helped to integrate other companies in the payroll and data processing departments, including; Cone Mills, City of Greensboro, NCNB, Ashland Oil Company and UNC-Greensboro's Accounting Office as the first black Travel Auditor. While working and building her career, she attended the NC School of Automation, Greensboro College, GTCC, NC A&T State University, and Winston-Salem State University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in 2011.

At age 13, Martha joined Union Grove Congregational Church in McLeansville, NC. She later joined Reid Memorial CME Church and Bethel AME Church both in Greensboro, NC. During her tenure at Bethel, she served as President of the Drama Ministry where she wrote, directed, and produced skits, plays and other material for the spiritual uplifting of church members. She also served as a member of the Senior Choir, a member of the Missionary Society, Summer Bible Facilitator and Assistant Instructor of Wednesday Bible Study, Secretary for the Lay Council,  Chair of the Unsung Heroes Committee, and a member of the Public Relations Commission. She was a member of Morning Star Chapter #591 Order of the Eastern Star PHA for more than 40 years and served as Worthy Matron and District Matron.

She is survived by her husband, Ray K. Flowers; daughter, Saundra Flowers DeLauder (William, Jr.); son, Hugh Da Vince Flowers (Angela); grandchildren, Taft Flowers (Keyona), Rachel DeLauder, and Thomas Flowers; 1 great-grandson, Taft, Jr.; sisters, Lois Graham, Virgia Tatum, Doris Barnard (Kenneth), Diana Johnson (Ronald), Demetra Jefferies, Romona James (Rick), and Janice Jefferies; brother, Harry Tatum, Jr.; 3 brothers-in-law and 5 sisters-in-law; Walter Flowers (Mariea), Raymond Flowers (Carolyn), Melba McMillan (Charles), Carolyn Flowers, Joanne Flowers and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held Friday, March 1, 2019 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 200 N. Regan Street, Greensboro, NC.  Visitation with the family will begin at 2:00 p.m., followed by the service at 3:00 p.m.  Entombment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 N. O'Henry Blvd., Greensboro, NC.
