Mabel left Caswell County after graduating from Caswell County Training School (CCTS), Class of '54. She moved to Charlottesville VA where she was employed by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Carroll in 1954-55. She originally was employed to assist with Mrs. Frances Carroll's father, Mr. Rufus McKinney Price. By the time of his passing in 1956 she was a member of the family and stayed with the Carroll's until Mrs. Carroll's death in 1978 (Dr. Carroll passed in 1967). Their only child, Clinton (deceased 1972), married Lucy Semeler in 1956 and their daughters became Mabel's daughters as well. In 1979 she returned to Danville, VA and then a few years later went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Carson in Danville and then Richmond,VA. It was while she was living in Danville that her brother, William, introduced her to Stanley Clark and they were married in April 1988. She also assisted Mrs. Vine in the 1990's as a caregiver. Mabel eventually returned to North Carolina to be baptized at New Ephesus Missionary Baptist Church in Caswell County.
Mabel was the best cook in the world. She put on party's from 7-100 people with ease and was the kindest person to ever live. She was instrumental in helping the Carroll's with their extensive work in the Methodist Church and running their rental properties in Ocean City, Md during the summer. In the summer it was not unusual for her to watch one ball game and have two radios going with other games on it. Mabel had impeccable taste and loved to collect Waterford, Wedgwood, coins, sports memorabilia and dolls. She loved coconut cake, animals of all kinds but especially cocker spaniels, walks on the boardwalk in the evenings, baseball and basketball, the color purple, and children (especially babies). She loved violets and always had them lining her windows. Her dinner rolls and strawberry preserves were treasured gifts at Christmas time. Mabel did not give second chances, if she believed in you she gave you as many chances as you needed. She leaves a legacy of respect, tolerance, compassion and love.
