Dr. Lois Harriet Belton Kinney,95, was called home to be with her precious Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 14, 2017. She was born on August 25, 1922 to the late Walter and Lilla McIntosh Belton, Sr.
Dr. Kinney's early education began in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida where her excellence in academic achievement allowed her to skip two separate grade levels before graduating from high school. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wilberforce University, Wilberforce, OH, and both her Masters of Art degree in Speech and Drama, and her Ph.D. in Speech Communication from Ohio State University, Columbus, OH.
Dr. Kinney has had extensive classroom teaching experience and drama directing experience in a number of states and cities including New York, NY Nashville, TN, Petersburg, VA, Atlanta, GA, Montgomery, AL, Concord, NC, Jacksonville, FL, and Tallahassee, Fl. Dr. Kinney held memberships in the Speech Communication Association and the Southern Speech Association. She was a member of the Reidsville Chapter of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. She was also a member of the Greek Sorority – Sigma Gamma Rho. She performed in numerous theatre productions with the Community Theatre of Greensboro where she received "Best Actress Awards for her role in "A Raisin in the Sun" and "The Member of the Wedding". She was also a published writer in national journals. She held a Key for Excellence in Play Directing from Theta Alpha Phi, a National Theatre Honorary fraternity.
In 1961 she became the first black female radio announcer in Greensboro at WEAL Radio. She was affectionately known as "Miss K". She was a founder and first director of the campus radio station WANT, now WNAA 90.1 at North Carolina A&T State University. Prior to her radio career in Greensboro, she was associated with radio station WERD and WAOK in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her Federal Communication license (FCC) from Atlanta, GA.
Dr. Kinney was the recipient of the University "Teacher of the Year Award" in 1984 and currently has a scholarship in her name to be awarded to students studying Mass Communications and Journalism at NC A&T.
Dr. Kinney was a longtime member of Genesis Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC where she served for many years as the Director of the Speech Choir. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. She loved cooking, traveling, spending time with friends, family, and her pets.
Dr. Kinney leaves to cherish her memories her loving daughter Charma K. Harris of Greensboro, NC; her grandson Arturo G. Kinney of Greensboro, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 N O'Henry Blvd., Greensboro. Visitation with the family begin at 2:00 pm followed by the service at 2:30 pm.
