On August 16, 2015, a faithful and humble servant of the Lord was called home. Sister Lillian Tarpley Alston was born February 28, 1922 to the late Odetious and Edith Goins Tarpley.
Lillian attended Guilford County Schools. She retired from Greensboro City Schools as a cook and worked within the eldercare nursing system as a CNA for many years. She also worked at the Guilford Building in downtown Greensboro as an Elevator Operator.
Lillian married Leon Alston on April 12, 1941 and to this union 6 children were born.
Sister Alston was a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Society and the Senior Usher Board for over 67 years. She loved to work in the kitchen at the church and she loved to work on fund raisers for the church such as the baby contest. Most of all, she loved to usher with her sister, Alma.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Leon (Shack) Alston; son, Thaddeus (TJ) Alston; sisters, Alma Mebane and Florence Fields; and brothers, Howard and James Tarpley.
Loving memories will always remain in the hearts of her family: daughters, Mildred Smith (William) of Brooklyn, NY and Marcia Alston of Greensboro, NC; sons, Charles, Robert, and Elliot Alston all of Greensboro, NC; brother, Ralph Tarpley of Greensboro, NC;10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2700 W. Vandalia Rd., Greensboro, NC. Visitation begins at 2:30 pm followed by the service at 3:00 pm.
Interment will follow at New Goshen United Methodist Church Cemetery.
