Obituary

John Elvin Long, son of the late John H. and Ruth Daye Long was born in Alamance County on May 23, 1938. He departed this life on Monday morning, June 25, 2018 at the Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC following several months of illness.

He attended the Greensboro Public Schools.

Prior to retirement he worked as a concrete finisher for many years. He had a passion for fishing, hunting, and coaching men and women softball teams. The John Long Starters won many softball championships throughout the city.

Spending much of his downtime sitting on the front porch and gathering all the news he became known by the family as the "Mayor" of Greenfield homes neighborhood.

John leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Mrs. Barbara D. Long, daughter: Ms. Crystal of Greensboro, NC; two sons, Mr. Elvin and Mr. Angelo (Arlene) both of Greensboro; two sisters, Mrs. Janie Smith of Greensboro, NC and Mrs. Sheila Fuller (Donnie) of Burlington, NC; one brother, Mr. Derrick Long (Darlene) of Mebane, NC; stepmother,  Mrs. Katie Long of Mebane, NC; stepsister, Mrs. Donna Kay Torian (Cruddie) of Burlington, NC; stepbrother, Mr. Dennis Bryant (Delsie) of Graham, NC; one aunt, Mrs. Verna Thompson of Mebane, NC; six grandchildren, twelve nieces, eight nephews, four sister in-laws and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Mr. Calvin Joseph Long.

A homegoing celebration will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel, 905 E. Market Street, Greensboro.  Visitation with the family begins at 11:00 am followed by the service at 11:30 am.  Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park.
