Jarrod (Jay) Austin Smith, "J-Mixx, the Urban Sound Surgeon," 52, was born on April 26, 1966 in Greensboro, NC to Robert and Sadie Smith. He passed away on January 18, 2019.

He graduated from James B. Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC in 1984 and attended North Carolina A&T State University.  Jay worked for many years as a DJ for WQMG 97.1 and WNAA 90.1.  Jay was employed at Gilbarco Veeder-Root, Spectrum Labs, and Wachovia until his health declined.  Jay married Colleen Boyea-Smith on September 22, 2001 in Alexander, NC.  He loved music of all genres and spent many years singing in the church choir.  If you knew Jay, he was a huge Duke Blue Devils fan.

Jay is survived by his wife, Colleen Boyea-Smith; children, Christa and Taryn Smith and Ben Shanberg; grandchildren, Jacobi and Ishani Smith, Camden Shanberg; parents, Robert and Sadie Smith; siblings, Marilyn A. Smith, Charles (Tara) Smith; nieces and nephews Courtney, Christian, Kayla, and Jayden Smith; and a host of family and friends.
