IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Janet Sherman
Garrett
September 23, 1937 – May 24, 2021
On May 24, 2021, Janet Denise Sherman Garrett passed away peacefully at Beacon Place. Janet was born September 23, 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pa to the late Jonas Sherman and Eleonore Martin and her Grandparents Elijah & Rose Fleming Martin were very instrumental in Janet's upbringing, introducing Janet to the Quran.
Janet graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1956. Janet loved cheering, cooking, sports and music. She would sing with the Braddock Hills Community choir. Janet was a true people's person!
In 1960 Janet moved to Greensboro, NC to attend NCA&TSU, then NC A&T College on the recommendation of Rev. J.A. Williams, her Pastor at Baptist Temple Church, in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh, where she accepted Christ as a teen while she studied religious education, a class within the public school system held at different churches in the area. At A&T Janet majored in Business Education.
In 1968 Janet met John C. Garrett and they got engaged while she was working at NC National Bank. Soon thereafter, John was called into the Army and served in Vietnam. After John returned from Vietnam, Janet married the love of her life on March 7, 1970. Janet had converted to Catholicism and they were married at The Miraculous Medal Catholic Church (St. Mary's) in Greensboro, NC.
After exiting the Army, Janet and John relocated to Bethpage, NY, where both began working with Grumman Aerospace Corporation. While at Grumman, Janet completed her education at Adelphi University in Long Island, NY, graduating Summa Cum Lau, with a BS Degree in Business Administration in May of 1979. They also, attended a Catholic Church there, The Miraculous Medal. Odd but true. They both retired early and relocated back to Greensboro. Janet retired as a as Senior Budget Analyst and John in Senior Cost Management.
In 1990, John and Janet decided to build a home, a monumental challenge! Thus, Janet began her new career managing the entire project while John had accepted a job at NCA&TSU. It took six months and turned out well. It ended up being their hardest job.
John and Janet were inseparable and would spend their life doing everything together which included their love for A&T. They supported the "Aggie Club" now known as the AAF Booster Club and volunteered at the basketball games for many years. Janet cherished traveling to watch and coach/cheer (as fans) for her beloved "Aggies" with the Aggie Club on football/basketball trips. She also knew the names of all the Aggie Basketball team members. The officials also knew her voice well!
Janet's smile and personality were what made her such a special person, friend, wife and relative. She touched a lot of people and people seemed to gravitate towards her. A trait which John cherished, he gravitated also!
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, Cleveland "Butch" Martin, and sister, Marline Rose "Molly" Lyons Patterson.
Cherishing her memory are her husband, John C. Garrett of the home; sister Mary Lou Clapp (Harold), special niece/goddaughter Sylvia Clapp-White (Virgil), brothers, Paul T. Lyons, Wade Plair (Pittsburgh, Pa), and her youngest sister, Jacqueline Jackson Hardy (Moss Point, MS) as well as many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Acknowledgements:
I want to thank my niece Sylvia & Virgil (husband) for keeping Janet's spirits up all during her illness.
