Obituary

Iva Louise McLean Draughn 'Cookie' a dedicated wife, adored mother, cherished grandmother, beloved sister and aunt, and dear friend to many, went peacefully to be with her heavenly father at Wesley Long Hospital on June 11, 2016 in Greensboro, North Carolina at the age of 75.

Peacefully, Iva joined her husband, Claude Draughn of 47 years; daughter, Angela Draughn; parents, Neill & Iva McLean; and brother, Charles McLean. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Erica Draughn (Greensboro); granddaughter, Sarah Draughn (Greensboro); four siblings, Neill McLean Jr. (Cathy), Dover, De, Edward McLean (Ruth) (Greensboro), Mary Dowdell (Greensboro)and Paul McLean (Mikki) (Newport News, VA). In addition, she leaves a host of nieces and nephews, as well as countless friends.

Iva was born on July 28, 1940 in Bricks, North Carolina to Neill and Iva McLean. Her early elementary school years were spent in Edgecombe County, N.C., followed by high school years in Gloucester, Va. where she graduated from T.C. Walker High School. She attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1965. She later furthered her studies at Duke University. After obtaining a North Carolina teaching license, she began her career as an educator at Conetoe High School in Tarboro, N.C. She continued to pursue her passion for educating youth in Orange County, N.C. and Pinellas County, Fl. until she retired from Pinellas County Drop-Out Prevention Program at the age of 62. During her 21 years of service to Pinellas County School System, she promoted the importance of education and discipline to high-risk teens and encouraged her students to persevere to reach their goals despite life's obstacles.

'Cookie' was a minister of hospitality, good cook, nurturer, caregiver, and family matriarch. She has deeply touched many lives albeit personal or professionally and has left an impact on all that she encountered. As a devoted servant of God, she always felt it necessary to join a local church. After returning to North Carolina in 2010, she partnered with Love and Faith Christian Fellowship until she transitioned to her heavenly home. She continuously demonstrated Christ's love to all as she stood on the scripture Hebrews 13:1-2 "Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."

A celebration of her life is scheduled for Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Love and Faith Christian Fellowship, 4344 Blackberry Road, Greensboro, NC 27406. Viewing and greeting of family will be at 11:00 a.m., followed by service at 11:30 p.m. Interment will be at Westminster Garden Cemetery, 3601 Whitehurst Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27410. Flowers and condolences can be sent to 2310 Bonaire Lane, Greensboro, N.C. 27405. The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and generosity during this challenging time.
