IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Irene Bernice
Street
May 12, 1934 – September 20, 2019
On September 20, 2019, surrounded by three generations of family, Irene Bernice Street passed from this earth and received her Heavenly wings. Born in East Orange, NJ on May 12, 1934, Irene was born to the late Vanderbilt Shorts and Dorothy Vandervall Shorts.
Irene grew up spending her early years between East Orange and Orange, NJ before graduating from Orange High School in 1952. That same year shortly after graduating, Irene married the one and only love of her life Walter B. Street whom she would spend her life with until his transition to Heaven in 2002. Irene and her husband eventually moved to Rahway, NJ, where she raised two beautiful daughters and her late-sister's children as her own. She also worked for ITT as a Quality Inspector before retiring and relocating to Danville, VA in 1990 to become a fulltime loving grandmother.
Anyone that knew Irene knows she loved reading her Bible. She undoubtedly loved the Lord which was reflected in the love and care she showed to others. After the Bible, Irene's second favorite book was any and all things with crossword puzzles. Oftentimes you would find her drowning in crossword puzzle books with the biggest smile on her face. And as many know, Irene was not one who could stay retired. She spent the last 13 years of her life assisting her youngest daughter in running a group home where she held many healthcare certifications.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Vanderbilt and Dorothy Shorts; husband, Walter Street of 49 years; brother, Walter Shorts; sisters, Consuela Booker and Juliette Watkins; niece, Kim Booker; and nephews, Chester Booker and Winfred Booker.
Irene leaves behind a loving legacy to her two daughters, Vondra Street Slade and Tracey Street Johnson of Greensboro, NC; brother, Frederick Shorts of East Orange, NJ; sons-in-law, Kenneth Johnson of Newark, NJ and Willie M. Slade, Jr. of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Marlow Mosby, Karla Timmons (Dorian), Willie Slade, III (Keshia), Marique Mosby (Bernadette), Paige McClenney (David), Jennifer Slade (Senaca); great grandchildren, Benjamin, Dylan, and Israel; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and caring friends.
Irene Street's strength and fighting spirit stayed with her to the very end, as was witnessed firsthand even by her doctors and nurses. Her warmness and kindness, along with her love of God and family will live on through those she touched for generations to come. It is only by God's love that we were so blessed to have Irene Street on this earth for 85 years. And it is by God's grace that she now rests in His arms.
A homegoing celebration will be held Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel, 905 E. Market Street, Greensboro, NC. Visitation with the family will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by the service at 12 noon.
