Herodotus Herschelle
Howell
February 23, 1957 – February 20, 2026
Corporal Herschelle Herodotus Howell, beloved brother, proud Marine, and father, departed this life on Friday morning , February 20,2026, on Heros Way at the Durham VA Health Care System. he was 68 years old.
Born on February 23,1957, in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, North Carolina, Herschelle was the oldest of three children born to the late William M. Howell and the late Lillian S. Howell. At an early age, his family relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he was raised and educated. He attended James Benson Dudley Senior High School.
In 1979, Herschelle answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. During his military career, he distinguished himself as an Automotive Technician and Marine Corps Motor Vehicle Operator. Through dedication and discipline, he rose to the rank of Corporal.
Corporal Howell earned the Rifle Marksman Badge and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, serving his country and his fellow Marines with Loyalty, Courage, and Pride. He remained faithful to the Marine Corps motto -Semper Fidelis- until his honorable discharge in 1984.
After completing his military service, Herschelle returned to North Carolina and made Durham his home. He had a deep love for fishing; he found peace by the water with a rod in hand. Fishing wasn't just a pastime; it was his sanctuary.
In later years, the onset of several illnesses led to a gradual decline in his health. Yet even in the face of adversity, he carried himself with resilience and strength-- the Heart of a Marine.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his son, Brandon H. Gaddy (Melody) of Durham, North Carolina ; two grandsons, Donovan and Simeon; his brother, Michael M. Howell; his sister, Freda E. Howell of Greensboro, North Carolina; his aunt, Alma P. Newsome of Chesapeake, Virgina; and a hos of cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
