Obituary

Gwendolyn Moon Donnell Cobb was born May 30, 1943 in Greensboro, NC to the late Norman J. and Annie M. Moon. At the age of 18 mths, she was adopted by the late Raymond U. and Pauline A. Donnell.

Gwen, as she was lovingly known, graduated from James B. Dudley High School in 1960 and she received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bennett College in 1964. She began to teach in 1969 in Burlington, NC at Jordan Sellars/Sellars-Gunn. She retired as Department Head in science and 9th grade educator at Walter M. Williams June 6, 1997.

During her retirement, Gwen became interested in quilting and joined the Heritage Quilters in 2000 where she formed a very special bond with the ladies of the group. Since then Gwen has lovingly hand-quilted many beautiful quilts and quillows for family members and friends that will be treasured and loved by all who received her gifts, where there was love in every stitch. Also in her spare time, she volunteered as a registrar for Vacation Bible School at Providence Baptist Church where she was a lifelong member. As a youth, Gwen was a Girl Scout, received highest honors, and was one of the 1st African Americans to participate at the Girl Scout Round-up in Denver, Colorado in the 1950's. She was an avid piano player, and tap, ballet & jazz dancer under the direction of Mr. Felicia.

Gwen was ALWAYS so full of life, vibrant, and the life of the party. She had a smile that would brighten up a room anywhere she went. She was also feisty and out-spoken. When she spoke, people listened!
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Torian Daniels (Cutlar); two grandsons, Donovan W. Daniels and Ryan D. Daniels (who she was extremely proud of and loved with every inch of her heart); two step grandsons, Sean M. Daniels and Renardo L. Andrews (who meant the world to her); sister, Maxine Moon; aunts, Myrtle A. Weekes, Dottie Alston and Catherine Kinsey. She leaves behind VERY special nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, beautiful cousins, and very close, wonderful friends, all whom she loved so dearly.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Providence Baptist Church, 1106 Tuscaloosa Street, Greensboro, NC. Visitation begins at 11:00 am followed by the service at 11:30 am.
