Obituary

Gertrude Hilda McAdoo Chambers, 80, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Peak Resources – Treyburn Nursing Center after battling Alzheimer's disease. Gertrude was born on May 6, 1935 in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Hilton and Emma Morgan McAdoo. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Robinson, J. Lafayette Morgan, Walter H. McAdoo, Eugene S. McAdoo; and her sister, Paulette M. Lawson.

Gertrude was educated in the Guilford County Public School System and was a very proud graduate of James B. Dudley High School Class of 1953 where she excelled in English, Math, Latin, and French. She was an avid alto for the illustrious Dudley High School Concert Choir. Her zeal and enthusiasm in English and Writing was a vehicle for her to be asked by her teacher to become the Fashion Editor of the School Newspaper "The Panther's Claw" where she affectionately signed as "Kitty Wee of 53." She also enjoyed attending church at Union Memorial United Methodist Church singing in the Junior Choir and Senior Choir as an adult. She was a great cook and loved to make her family member's birthday cakes. After high school "Kitty" matriculated at North Carolina A&T State University in the coveted First Nursing Class of 1957. She was proud to be one of the illustrious "15" as she would say – all passing the rigorous NC State Nursing Board Exam on the first try. She was very meticulous and a stickler for the appearance, behavior, and professionalism of the nursing profession – "no scrubs for her" as she continued to wear the coveted box nursing hat-privy to the NC A&T Nursing Graduates, white uniform, and polished oxford shoes even after standards in nursing attire became relaxed. She also did graduate work at UNC Chapel Hill.

Gertrude was a Registered Nurse. She spent much of her nursing career in many places and health care capacities. Her healthcare career started while in High School as her first position was at the Old Polio Hospital as a Dietary Aide along with her mother. She also practiced nursing at Tuskegee Airbase in Tuskegee, Alabama. Other places of employment were in Paterson, NJ, New York, NY, Raleigh, NC, and Greensboro, NC. She spent her last years of employment in Durham, NC where she worked in Geriatrics.

Gertrude was a very caring true Christian. Her favorite pastimes were reading the Bible, playing the piano, listening to music especially hymns, spirituals, and classical forms, and singing the Dudley High School Alma Mater being her favorite song to sing. She was a volunteer with the Senior Citizens Alliance of Durham, NC. She was passionate about attending St. Titus Episcopal, St. Mark, St. Joseph AME, and Asbury Temple United Methodist churches in Durham, NC. She also loved attending the public events at the Duke University Chapel.

She is survived by daughters, Ingrid C. McAdoo of Greensboro, NC and Cheryl Steed (Carlton) of St. Louis, MO; grandson, Jontaar Michener of Fuquay Varina, NC; step-grandchildren, Careesa and Isaac Steed of St. Louis, MO; sisters, Lola A. McAdoo, Virginia M. Grier, Beatrice M. Shaw (Bob) all of Greensboro, NC, and Emma M. Gunn of Danville, VA; aunt, Nannie McAdoo Dick of Greensboro, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel, 905 E. Market Street, Greensboro, NC. Visitation with the family begins at 10:30 am followed by the service at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery.
