Obituary

Fredd M. Hodge was born on June 16, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the first born to the late Jeremiah and Florence Hodge and the big brother to his only sibling, Joyce L. Hodge. He peacefully departed this life on Sunday, November 19, 2017.

Fredd graduated from Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and shortly after acquired a job at Atlantic Richfield Chemical Company (ARCO) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he worked for over thirty years as a Records Coordinator. While employed at ARCO, he played on the company's softball team, 'Heads Up', for ten years and was the team's captain. Fredd retired from ARCO in 1998.

Fredd's first love was his family. He was a dedicated son, brother, and father to his two daughters, Toiya Lynn Hancock (the late Deborah Hodge) and Jamillah Hodge (Valerie Hodge).

In September 2005, Fredd moved to Greensboro to be close to his daughter, Toiya and her family. He had been a proud father and became an even prouder 'Pop Pop' to his two grandchildren, Jason McQuen Hancock, Jr. (affectionately named by his Pop Pop, lil' dude) and Taylor Lynn Hancock.

Fredd was well known and loved for his outgoing personality, charm and sense of humor. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed engaging in sports commentary. Fredd was in many respects a collector of sports paraphernalia, particularly of his favorite teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles. He also had an extensive collection of glasses and was meticulous about every pair. Fredd liked listening to the sounds of Motown and Jazz and considered himself to be a great dancer. In his down time, he challenged himself with crossword puzzles and cryptograms.

In June 2013, Fredd moved in with his sister, Joyce who had also relocated to Greensboro from Philadelphia to be close to family. The following year, Fredd was diagnosed with Frontal Lobe Dementia and as his condition worsened, Joyce became his caregiver. In June 2017 Fredd entered in a memory care facility and then later received care as a hospice patient at Beacon Place.

Leaving to cherish Fredd's memory are: his sister, Joyce Hodge; his daughters, Toiya Lynn Hancock and Jamillah Hodge; one son-in-law, Jason McQuen Hancock, Sr.; two grandchildren, Jason McQuen Hancock, Jr. and Taylor Lynn Hancock; a special cousin, Melvin (Brenda) Jones; a host of loving relatives and longtime and dear friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel, 905 E. Market Street, Greensboro at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 3:00 pm.
