Fred Elgin Singleton, son of the late Frances Lorraine Cox and Herman Cox, was born in Knoxville, TN on July 30, 1937, and quietly passed away on December 23, 2021.
He was educated in the public schools of Knoxville and graduated from Spingarn High School in Washington, D.C. He studied Nursing at the University of D.C. He held a number of jobs during his lifetime—he worked at the Post Office, co-owned Singleton's Head Hunters Beauty Shop in Washington, D.C., was a manufacturing representative for Summit Laboratories, owned Georgetown Gift Shop, Singleton's Variety Store, Freddie's Beauty Salon, and worked as a security guard. Fred enjoyed meeting and conversing with people. He loved hunting and fishing.
Before joining Paramount Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., Fred attended the Church of God in Christ Church. Upon moving to Greensboro, NC, Fred joined East White Oak Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by two sisters--Mary Louise Cox and Shirley Lowery, his grandmother—Lucy Singleton, and his grandson—Daniel Singleton.
Fred leaves to mourn: his wife Beulah Wright Singleton, two sons—Aundre Jermaine Singleton (Loretta) of Largo, MD and Juan Hosea Singleton (Lorna) of Long Beach, CA, daughter—Wanda Singleton Kerr (Dawson) of Greensboro, NC, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law—Mary Wright Garvin and Margarete Wright Davis-Peterkin of Society Hill, SC, Ednita Wright Bullock of Greensboro, and Bertha Wright Higgs (Dave) of Durham, NC, special friend Carolyn Acklin, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A public viewing will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2022 at Hargett Funeral Service, Inc., 905 E. Market Street, Greensboro from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
A homegoing celebration will be held on Monday, January 3, 2022 in East White Oak Baptist Church, 1815 Water St, Greensboro. Visitation with the family begins at 11:30 am followed by the service at 12:00 pm. Interment will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 10:00 am.
