Eva Alice Foster, daughter of the late Rev. Joseph Oscar and Eva Turner Foster, was born February 6, 1925 in Waynesboro, VA. She departed this life July 15, 2015 at the age of 90.
Eva attended Dudley High School, where she graduated in 1941. From there, Eva attended North Carolina A&T State University; she graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. In 2001, she became one of the inaugural members of Dudley High's Hall of Distinction where her picture hangs in the main lobby.
Although she never married or had children of her own, Eva was an outstanding educator. She taught for many years within the Rockingham County School system in Eden, NC.
Eva enjoyed teaching, however, her heart was in music. Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to hear her sing would undoubtedly agree, she was an extraordinary singer with outstanding vocal ability. Eva pursued her love of music by singing with various groups and well known individuals. Everyone from Greensboro all the way up the East Coast was mesmerized by her vocal talents and style. In 1948, she won First place at the Apollo Theater in NYC. Her vocal talents and wit opened the door for the opportunity to meet well known jazz singer, Billie Holiday. And in the 1950's, Eva, along with the Van Perry Quintet, recorded a hit single entitled, "You'll Never Know" on the Atlantic Record label.
After a very successful singing career, Eva returned to Greensboro in 1956 to be closer to her parents and help care for them. She was also very instrumental in the lives of many Greensboro youth and young adults. At the age of 87, she was honored, and performed at an event called "The Living Legends of Jazz and Blues" to help raise money for the members of the Triad Youth Jazz and Blues Society. And each year, since 2001, she's given a scholarship to a Dudley athlete who intends to play football at A&T, in honor of her dad.
Eva sang at Bethel AME Church, the place where her granddad, the late Rev Giles Foster, and dad were once pastors. She continued to serve at Bethel and sing in the choir until her health no longer enabled her to do so. Her dedication and commitment to Bethel AME Church was unparalleled. She loved her church, and she loved her pastor.
Eva leaves to cherish her memory: Niece, Constance Lynn Bronson (James), Great-Niece, Christal Lynn Webber (Jason), Great-greats: Laura, Chantay, Isaiah, Jocelyn; Trey, Josiah, Shamar, and Sanai; devoted long-time friend, Gertrude Goodall, and a host of cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Bethel AME, 200 N. Regan Street, Greensboro, NC. Visitation begins at 11:00 am followed by the service at 12:00 pm.
