Obituary

Ethel Beatrice "Bea" Cotton Garrett entered this earth on November 3, 1926. She took flight and returned to her Heavenly Father and on June 30, 2019.  "Ms. Ethel or Bea" as she was affectionately called was born to Carrie and George Cotton who proceeded her in death in Oxford, North Carolina.  She moved to Greensboro after her marriage to Eugene Norman Garrett of 72 years and their union produced four children Theresa, Roderick, Regina and Yolandra.

Ethel was a beautician, domestic, and senior caregiver for most of her life. She worked for Jane and Johnny Ellison and The Cooke Family; because of her kindness and love she continued communication with both families until her death.  In her later years she returned to work with the Greensboro City Public School System with the Foster Grandparents Program, which she found very rewarding.  Ethel was very active in her community as a volunteer and worked tirelessly with the Neighborhood Watch Program that hosted the yearly National Night Out whose goal was to reduce crime and bring unity to the community.  Over the years she received many recognitions and certifications for her work with the City of Greensboro and the Police Department.  Ethel was the president of the Friendly Neighbor Council and Community Watch of Washington Park for years until her health declined.

When she saw a need in others, she immediately seeked to find resolution and provide aide. She was a dedicated member of New Light Baptist Church for over sixty years and after her health began to fail, she attended Good News Baptist Church which was closer to her home.  She had a Ministry of Helps and always had a true and sincere word for anyone seeking her advice.  Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalms and was known to tell you to repeat it three times whenever troubles were present.

Ethel belonged to the Order of Eastern Star Jasmine Chapter No. 7, Beautician Council, Red Hats, and Community Watch.  Ethel loved to garden, and her yard won many awards for her beautiful flowers and landscaping.  She enjoyed traveling and was proud she had the opportunity to experience so many states and national treasures.

Ethel loved her husband Eugene, her children, her siblings and family.  She leaves to cherish the wonderful memories of love and caring to her husband, Eugene, children Theresa (Clint), Roderick (Trevaugh), Regina (Howard "Ty"), and Yolandra (Treaty); grandchildren Trina, Marissa, and Myha Dyonnye; great grandchildren, Ivorie, Trevonte, Faith Myha and one great-great grand, A'vah.  She was the matriarch of eight siblings and was proceeded by two brothers George Cotton, Jr and Anthony "Tony" Cotton, and one son-in-law Michael Dwayne Shipp, she has six sisters, Margie, Mozelle, Barbara, Judy, Narbara, and Vivian; two sisters-in-law, Maxine and Carol and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends; a devoted friend of over 72 years, Mrs. Cora Montague; god-daughter, Dorothy Culbertson and devoted neighbors and caretakers.

Mothers final request was to tell everyone "she loved them".
