Greensboro - First Lady Dorothy V. Tate peacefully went home to be with the Lord March 8, 2012.
The funeral will be Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at the Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel, 905 E. Market Street, Greensboro. Reverend Jesse Rowe will officiate at the service. Visitation begins at 11:30 a.m. and the service begins at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park.
Dorothy was born in Greensboro, North Carolina January 5, 1934, the only daughter of Ernest Kinard and Addie Kinard. She is preceded in death by her son, Ronald Johnson of Greensboro, North Carolina, and daughter Phylis Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia. She was a graduate of James B. Dudley High School, Class of 1952.
Dorothy leaves to cherish loving memories her husband, Elder Robert R. Tate, Jr.; grandchildren, Damon L. Johnson and Jermaine D. Johnson; two great grandchildren, Jaliel D. Johnson, and Carleta Deal, also known as her best friend. Dorothy was affectionately known by all of her children as "Big Mama".
She was the First Lady and Secretary of the church she and her husband founded together, Church of the First Born, on Textile and Woodmere Drive.
Dorothy was employed 14 years at Cone Hospital and retired from P. Lorillard after 29 years of service. She was an avid bowler on the P. Lorillard Bowling League.
