GREENSBORO - Mrs. Dorothy McGibonney Brown transitioned from labor to reward on January 31, 2012 at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, NC surrounded by friends and relatives.
A Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Love and Faith Christian Fellowship Center where Mrs. Brown was a member. Viewing and visitation will be from 11 am to 12 pm with the family arriving at 11:30 am.
Mrs. Brown was born July 4, 1930 in Greensboro to the late Luther McGibboney and Katie Hayes McGibonney. She was educated in the Guilford County public school system, NC A&T State University, Cornell University School of Nursing, New York, NY and was presently enrolled at Strayer University in Greensboro.
Mrs. Brown was active with Greensboro City Government, Guilford County Government, and was a community activist. She was active in the NAACP, Greensboro Citizen Academy, Urban Ministry, Democratic Women of Guilford County, Greensboro Human Relations Commission, Ole Asheboro Neighborhood Association and The Salvation Army. She was a retired nurse formerly employed with L. Richardson Hospital, Greensboro, NC, Jacobia Hospital, Bronx, NY and Albert Einstein Medical Center, New York, NY.
Mrs. Brown believed that everyone was cut out for certain things and she realized she was cut out to serve people at whatever expense. The Ole Asheboro Neighborhood Association and City Government elected to name a park, six housing developments and a street in her honor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Brown, her parents, son, Albert McGibonney, brother, Louis McGibboney, Charlotte, NC and sister, Adelaide Becoat, New Jersey.
Left to cherish her memory are grandson, Albert McGibonney, Atlanta, GA; sister, Barbara Phillips, Tacoma, WA; great-grandsons, Nicholas, Jonathan, Christian, Bryce and Justin; nieces, Veronica, Cynthia, Delcenia, Myraette (Cookie) and Keisha; nephews, Kenneth, Antony and Louis, Jr.; devoted acquired children, James Whitcomb, Jr. (Frances), JoAnne Blackwell-Akaramou (Omar), John Rich (Marie), Larry Moore, James Kee (Tamara), Robert Leonard, Frances Jackson; and a host of other nieces, nephews and relatives.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that contributions be made to the Jonathan Stowe Trust Fund located at the Woodforest National Bank of Greensboro.
