Obituary

Mrs. Dixie Lea Goins-Gillies went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 9, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois. She was 83 years old. Dixie was married to the late Pastor Douglas M. Gillies, founder of Ebenezer Memorial Baptist Church in St. Thomas. She and Pastor Gillies were active in the Christian community in the Virgin Islands, the Caribbean and beyond.
Mrs. Gillies was educated in the Greensboro, NC. She moved to St. Thomas in 1953 and taught Home Economics at CAHS and was promoted to the State Supervisor of Home Economics for the Virgin Islands. She retired from the Department of Education in 1989.
Dixie touched the lives of countless numbers of people; wherever she traveled she made friends. Her life was one of giving and sharing - a smile, a word of encouragement, a phone call, visit, or a little something specially prepared and presented in a bag. Her ministry in this life had ended; however, the legacy left by Mother, Sister, Grandma Gillies and her late husband will live on for many years to come.
Dixie Lea Gillies is survived by her son, Daniel Gillies; two daughters, Diana Williams and Jewel Weathers; daughter-in-law; sons-in-law; grandchildren; her Ebenezer Memorial Baptist Church Family; the Bethel Baptist Church family; and many other congregations of believers, family and friends too numerous to name.
The first home going service for Sister Dixie Gillies will be Saturday, February 14th at 11:00 am CT at Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church; 8210 South Cornell Avenue, Chicago, IL 60617. The second going home service will be on Wednesday, Feb. 18th at 12noon ET at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2700 West Vandalia Road, Greensboro, NC.
A memorial service will be held in St. Thomas on Sunday, April 5th at 3:30 pm at Calvary Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Pastor Douglas and Dixie Gillies Scholarship Fund, Ebenezer Memorial Baptist Church, P. O. Box 308208, St. Thomas, VI 00803-8208.
