Obituary

Greensboro - DELBERT PHIFER, 83, of Greensboro, passed away peacefully on Saturday October 23, 2010 at Moses Cone Hospital surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Delbert, the youngest of 11 children, was born October 3, 1927. He was educated in Davie County. He attended R.A. Clement Agricultural School, the American Correspondence School (Chicago) and Russell Business School in Winston-Salem, NC. He was a veteran of the US Army, where he served during WWII.

He was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church where he was active with various ministries.

Delbert was employed by IBM where he worked for over 32 years and retired in 1987. During that time, he won several "IBM Means Service" Awards for his outstanding performance as an Accounts Payable Specialist. Because of this recognized expertise, he was called upon frequently to participate in Cash Fund Audits throughout the Region. Following retirement, Delbert volunteered with the Mobile Meals program, the Urban Ministry Food Bank, and the annual YMCA membership drive. He enjoyed helping others and managed to keep himself even busier in retirement than he did when he was working.

Delbert was a member and Honorary Past Master of St. John's Lodge #12 P.H.A; Member of Greensboro Consistory #106; Member of Commanders of the Rite #106, and Honorary Past Potentate of Kalif Temple #144 A.E.A.O.N.M.S. Inc. As a veteran, he was a member of American Legion, Avery Bethel Post #267.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years Ruth Fleming Phifer, his son Preston L. Fleming, his parents Champ and Ollie Phifer, seven brothers and three sisters. He leaves to mourn one son, Larry D. Phifer (Baleria) of Greensboro, NC, two daughters, Omega L. Phifer of Kernersville, NC and Joyce Phifer Moore (Brian) of Raleigh, NC, one daughter-in-law, Adrian K. Fleming (widow of Preston), five grandchildren, Leigh Fleming Morrison (Rommel), John L. Fleming (Kelli), Kevin J. Fleming, Racquel N. Phifer and Chadwick H. Phifer, four great-grand children Jayna Morrison, Elijah Morrison, Emma Fleming, Ava Fleming; one sister-in-law Ms. Alma Cowan of Salisbury, NC, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and a devoted friend Mrs. Velma Price.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 pm, Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Hargett Funeral Service and at the home all other times. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, October 28, 2010, at St. James Presbyterian Church, located at 820 Ross Avenue, Greensboro, NC. 27406.
