Obituary

Charles Henry McLean "Charlie" a dedicated husband, adored father, devoted grandfather, and humorous brother and uncle, went peacefully to be with his heavenly Father at Moses Cone Hospital on December 7, 2015 in Greensboro, North Carolina at the age of 70.

Charles was born on January 18, 1945 in Bricks, North Carolina to the late Neill and Iva McLean. His early elementary school years were spent in Edgecombe County, NC and Gloucester County, Virginia. He spent his high school years in Tarboro, N.C. graduating from W.A. Pattillo High School. He entered Fayetteville State University and later transferred to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Automotive Technology. In 2012, he obtained an additional Bachelor of Science in Theology from Community Bible Institute. He married Peggie Bryant, the love of his life on January 16, 1971. After graduation he began an extensive career in trucking until his health began to decline. His children remember him as a God-fearing, devoted, loving, hard-working, encouraging and family-oriented father who encouraged them to love God, strive for excellence, and pursue their dreams. For the past nineteen years, his days have been highlighted by enjoying time with his beloved grandchildren.

He enjoyed telling stories that were very creative in detail, but most of all he loved sharing the Word of God. His love for music and desire to spread the Gospel motivated him to sing in church choirs, quartet groups, and around the house. He also enjoyed fishing with family and friends. He was a skilled automobile and plane mechanic. He never met a stranger. Until his illness became debilitating, he served the Kingdom of God as a minister at Faith Community Church under the leadership of Reverend Nelson Johnson.

Charles is survived by his wife, Peggie Bryant McLean; children, Karen McLean-Cooper (David), Leslie McLean and LaBonnie Freeman all of Greensboro, NC; siblings, Neill McLean Jr. (Cathy),Dover, Delaware, Edward McLean (Ruth), all of Greensboro, NC; Iva Draughn of Greensboro, NC, Mary Dowdell of Greensboro, NC and Paul McLean (Micki) of Newport News, VA. In addition, he leaves twelve grandchildren and one great-grand child, as well as countless foster children, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Neill A. McLean; mother, Iva J. McLean; and son-in-law, Bryson Haywood.

A homegoing celebration will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at New Light Baptist Church, 1105 Willow Road, Greensboro, NC. Visitation with the family begins at 1:30 pm followed by the service at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park.
