IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Monroe
Alston, Sr.
September 5, 1941 – August 15, 2020
Mr. Charles Monroe Alston, Sr., aka "Tight Rope" or "Rope" was called home on Saturday August 15, 2020, due to respiratory failure. The world has lost a brother, a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather. He was 78.
Charles Monroe Alston, Sr. was born on September 05, 1941 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was the first born child of his parents, the late Leon (Shack) Alston and Lillian Ruth Tarpley. He attended and was educated at Goshen until its closing, then at Rena Bullock, a segregated school for African American students in southeastern Guilford County which went up the 9th grade. The oldest of six children, he made the choice not to return to school after the 9th grade, but went to work helping his father Leon with the work of the family farm. Later, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts to work with his favorite uncle, Uncle Watson (his mother's brother) for a time. After returning to Greensboro, NC, he met and married Dorothy Pickett of High Point, NC. Eager again to leave the South, they moved to Brooklyn, New York City with their daughter, Teresa. Three more children were born to this union, Laverne, Charles Jr., and Tony. After a few years of marriage in New York, they divorced, and he returned to Greensboro, NC, where he was employed at Guilford Mills Textile as a Machine Operator for many years.
He was a devoted sports fan who loved watching his favorite sports teams like the Dallas Cowboys; the Boston Celtics stemming from the days of Bill Russell; the UCLA Bruins, who once dominated college basketball; the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers; and even Auto Racing where he would keep and pile-up newspapers from years past. Sports seemed to be the vehicle that relaxed his troubled mind that tormented him from childhood.
The later years of his life, up until the time of his death, the thing that brought him most satisfaction and smiles to his face was his children and grandchildren. He loved spending time with them, or just talking with them on the phone. He was free to live again knowing that his children had loved him unconditionally. He had peace in knowing that his children were going to be OK; and that they had somehow learned some things from the mistakes that he had made during his life. For his children had made their decision to serve THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, and to honor their families even when they didn't see it emulated.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Leon Alston; his daughter, Laverne Jamison; and his youngest brother, Thaddeus (TJ) Alston.
He leaves to rejoice in his memory, his two sons, Charles Monroe Alston, Jr. (Latisha) of High Point, NC; and Tony Alston (Maruska) of Allenhurst, Georgia; and Teresa Legette (James) of High Point, NC; two brothers, Robert Alston, and Elliot Alston of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Mildred Smith (Smitty) of Brooklyn, NY; and Marca Alston of Greensboro, NC; one uncle, Ralph Tarpley; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; friends; and a BFF, Mr. Phillip McMillian.
Public viewing of Mr. Alston is 12 noon - 5:00 pm Thursday in Hargett Funeral Service.
The "Celebration Of Life" and the "Home Going Service" will take place in the Goldie Hargett Memorial Chapel located in Hargett Funeral Service, Inc. 905 East Market Street Greensboro, NC 27401 Friday August 21, 2020; Visitation with the family is 1:30 pm followed with the service at 2:00 pm.
