Obituary

On February 27, 2026, God called his beloved daughter, Betty Jo Gunthrop Evans to her heavenly home. Mother Betty Evans was born April 8, 1938 in Great Falls, South Carolina to the late Harris "H.M" Gunthrop  and the late Odessa Clinton Gunthrop Butler. She moved to Greensboro as a young adult. 

Mother Betty was educated in the public school system in South Carolina. She was steadily employed all of her life until retirement. Mother Betty was employed at A&T University as a dietary aide for several years. she was also employed for many years at the iconic L. Richardson Hospital as a nurses aide.

Mother Betty was a long time faithful member of St. Philip AME Zion Church and a member of the missionary board until her failing health. She loved God, Family, and Church. She enjoyed cooking and traveling. Mother Betty enjoyed her soap opera, westerns, and older T.V. shows. She loved people and people loved her. she never met a stranger.

Mother Betty Evans will ne greatly missed by all who knew her. We will not mourn, because she is resting in the Lord.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Evans; brothers Edward Gunthrop, Edward Gunthrop Jr, Malcom Gunthrop; sisters , Louise Butler, Mildred Butler, and Mary Carolene Roberts.

Mother Betty was devoted to her family. She will be forever cherished by her loving daughter, Angela Gunthrop Bennett, grandson Warrant Officer V William Carter (Missy) granddaughter, Christine Carter Akins (Camille); great grandchildren William Carter Jr, Destiny Carter, Tristan Carter, Raven Carter, Auri De La Cruz (Cameron); great great granddaughter, Milah; great great grandson, Kalio; brother Willie Gunthrop; Nephew-son, Stanley Gunthrop (Jean); great nieces, Greta Davis (Devon) and Amelia Robinson Gunthrop; great nephews, Larren Bennett and Montez Jacob; Ogden Street Ladies, Nesie Jackson, Monica Purvis, Kimley Crosby and Henrietta Robinson; special friend, Janie Mays; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Public viewing of Mrs. Evans is 12:00 p.m. through 5:00 p.m. Wednesday the 04th in Hargett Funeral Services 905 East Market Street Greensboro, NC. Visitation with the family and funeral service are 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. respectively Thursday March 05, 2026 in Saint Phillips A.M.E. Church 1330 Ashe Street Greensboro, NC. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park 3600 N. O'Henry Blvd (Hwy 29). Livestreaming of the service is available.
